Fenia has been lucky enough to work as a producer and commissioner. Her proudest achievement and legacy to the BBC was creating and developing the UK’s most popular entertainment show, Strictly Come Dancing aka Dancing with the Stars, which is still a global phenomenon.
At the BBC, she zoomed up the production ranks to Executive Producer, devising factual series and formats along the way. Following her reign as Editor of BBC ONE’s Holiday, she was poached by leading independent production company, Lion TV, to develop and produce Passport to the Sun, a documentary series for BBC ONE. But her skills as a format creator led the BBC to steal her back just two years later.
She returned as Daytime Commissioner and realised the need to expand the supplier base. She courted the very best in-house producers and independent production companies and was able to develop returnable and long running hit series e.g. Cash in the Attic, Escape to the Country as well as co-devising Flog It! She was responsible for overseeing hundreds of hours of television, and exec-produced and refreshed brands like City Hospital, Animal Park, Crimewatch Daily, Weakest Link, Ready Steady Cook, Bargain Hunt, Through the Keyhole etc.
After holding the reins as Controller of BBC Daytime, she moved across to Entertainment Commissioning where she was quick to spot important new brands – Comic Relief Does Fame Academy / Fame Academy, How do You Solve a Problem Like Maria, Only Fools on Horses, Dragons’ Den, Hard Spell, The Apprentice, The Fight, The Bachelor, Diners, Come and Have a Go etc.
In 2005 she was offered the role of Controller Features, Formats and Factual Entertainment, but was lured away from the BBC by the indie world, and co-founded Splash Media. She jointly ran a successful company and created and produced shows for the key broadcasters e.g. Eurovision Dance Contest, comedy drama Candy Cabs, Imagine – Bolshoi Boy (BBC ONE), documentaries Piers Morgan On… (ITV1), The Underdog Show and A Farmer’s Life For Me (BBC TWO), Fantasy Homes by the Sea (UKTV) Desperate Scousewives, and Great British Hairdresser (E4) FlashPrank (MTV), Cooks to Market (Sky Living) and the RTS and Broadcast nominated Operation Hospital Food with James Martin for BBC Daytime.
Melinamedia reflects Fenia’s endless passion and enthusiasm for television, and together with her talented team, it has become a powerhouse of ideas. The name Melina is a tribute to her greatest inspiration, her late Mum.
In another life Fenia would have been a singer, property developer or
